Enrollment for the Local 15 apprenticeship hiring-list is currently closed.

Current number on the hiring list: 31 (03/20/2025)

Apprenticeships in the IUEC are done via a hiring list and not a rolling enlistment.  This means that if we are not in a period of open recruitment, then there are no opportunities at this time for beginning an apprenticeship in Local 15.  The hiring list is opened, usually, on a 2–3-year basis and those interested in pursuing an apprenticeship are free to apply.  The number of applications is capped, and once this cap is reached, the list is closed.  After submitting an application, applicants are then asked to take a written exam and then sit for an interview which determines their order in the hiring pool.  Once ranked, applicants are hired in the order of their ranking.  Between open recruitment calls for the hiring list, it is not possible to apply for an apprenticeship position.

If You Are On The Current Hiring List:

If you are currently on the hiring list and would like to inquire as to the status of the existing list, or where on the hiring list the Local is sitting, please refer to our web-site at iuec15.com

Active-Duty Military and Veterans

If you are (or were) active-duty military personnel during the open enrollment period, the IUEC is partnered with Helmets to Hardhats, a national, nonprofit program that connects transitioning active-duty military service members, veterans, National Guard and Reservists with skilled training and quality career opportunities in the construction industry.  This program allows active-duty military personnel to apply for apprenticeship outside the period of active enrollment.

Check out the Helmets to Hardhats website to learn more.

  • An Apprenticeship in the IUEC is approximately 5 years, with 4 years of in-classroom schooling.  This schooling runs concurrent with working in the field as an elevator constructor.  The apprenticeship is, in total, the combination of weekly schooling and daily on-the-job (OJT) training/employment.

  • Schooling for apprentices is administered via NEIEP (the National Elevator Industry Education Program) with classes administered in the evenings at the IUEC Union Hall.  Apprentices do not pay for their schooling.  Failure to successfully pass classes and proceed though the apprenticeship program will result in a termination of employment and a removal from the trade.

  • New apprentices have a 1-year probationary period before becoming fully inducted members of the IUEC.

  • New Probationary Apprentices do NOT have benefits for their first 6-months.  After successfully completing 6 months of 100 hours, they become benefit eligible. When you complete100 hours in an 18-month period, you will become a member.

  • Apprentice pay rates are set by a percentage of journey workers' wages.  See our Wages and Zone Pay page for more information.

  • At the completion of the apprenticeship program, apprentices are required to sit, and pass, their state licensing exam.  A successful completion of this exam marks the end of the apprenticeship and marks the individual as a journey worker in the IUEC.

IUEC 15's Welding Booths - Apprentices, and Journey workers, can get their welding certifications on-site with certified welding instructors. Classroom tools such as the Valve Simulator allow for hands-on training during schooling. All books and materials needed for schooling are provided by NEIEP at no cost to students.
